Children in the community are left with very little to do apart from walking the dusty roads and ‘hanging around’ the local bars.  This often leads to a common problem in Kenya, glue-sniffing amongst the children. The number of children living on the street in Kenya, in all the towns including Nakuru, has increased during the last 20 to 25 years owing to the effects of and the increase in unemployment and poverty among the less educated, to the AIDS epidemic, and to the high incidence of single mothers.

Children who are on the street, or at risk of homelessness due to poverty, AIDs or abuse, sniff glue because it satisfies their hunger, cold, heartache and hopelessness

MIA’s goal is to provide full time quality care for orphans and to improve the welfare of the people in the community surrounding the orphanage.

Children cared for in the orphanage are provided with a safe environment, nutritional meals, health and medical care which meets their needs and an educational, stimulating environment.  This level of care is provided within the confines of the orphanage building and grounds.

Meeting the needs of ‘at risk’ and community children is more difficult as there are no recreational pursuits for them and no money for sporting equipment and training.

It is proposed to build a community playground within the grounds of the Nakuru Baby Orphanage.  Access will be available for all children from the community and will provide these children with a sense of ‘belonging’ and decrease their sense of hopelessness.

Project Description

This project plans to build a community playground to cater for 50 children on land already purchased by MIA.

The playground would comprise playground equipment such as swings, monkey bars, etc as well as a bike track and basketball and volley ball court.

To ensure there is no exploitation of children, fighting or theft, the playground will be staffed with a supervisor/guard.

Goal

The goal of the project is to provide community children with sporting activities to fill their leisure time.

Purpose

To improve the mental well-being of the community children and decrease the likelihood of children glue-sniffing in order to mask their heartache and hopelessness.
